Reconciliation or consolidation
Turkey witnessed a military coup on 15th July
2016 but ultimately failed. It is an attempt by a faction within the army. In
this article we will discuss about the historic nature of coups in Turkey and
the future course of action by the Turkey government ,also we will see the
scope of EU on this issue.
Turkey is seeing its 4th coup , the first coup
happened in 1960, which changed the history of civil military relationship.
Turkey has seen as a super power in a complicated region. After the collapse of
the Ottoman emperor, the path of Republic of Turkey was achieved by democratic
way. Even though Turkey has a majority Muslim population but it has a very
strong secular values. This is because of the father of modern Turkey Mustafa
Kemal Ataturk, who wanted his country to be a developed nation and the prosperity
of the people.
Turkey is facing internal problems for past some years,
Erdogan came power in 2014. From that point Turkey is facing many problems,
including the ISIS and the Kurdish uprising. Even though Turkey wanted to join
the EU there are issues that are not accepted by the union. The issues that are
not accepted by EU are freedom of press, Kurdish minority rights and human
rights violation.
All political parties and the people were against the
Erdogan government. This coup attempt was not a surprise in Turkey but the surprising
element is that it was not fully supported by the military. Even though we don’t
support the action by any group which is against an elected government, we have
to look into the effects of the post coup government action in a historic perspective.
Most of us don’t know that Adolf Hitler was elected by the
people of Germany as the chancellor. The reason behind the absolute power of
Hitler is because of the Reichstang building was set on fire on 27th
feb 1933. After which a state of emergency was declared in Germany, the freedom
and rights of the people was taken in the name of national security. There is
also the theory that the setting up of fire was an internal job by Hitler’s
men. We all know the power if Hitler after these events.
Turkey is on the same path, Erdogan’s government has
detained thousands of journalists, academics, Judges and military people.
Erdogan has declared a state of emergency which allows him to sign new laws
without prior parliamentary approval. Also there is talk of an executive
president, the crackdown is necessary at this point but it should not become
consolidation of power to Erdogan or his party. So far his government has not
taken any action to end the conflict among the people of Turkey, a reconciliation
step is not been attempted. They are also considering the options to re-establish
death punishment and if it happens then the dream of getting into EU is not
possible. EU’s member countries should not have death punishment, even though
Turkey is the second largest military in NATO international voices have not
supported Erdogan , it has supported the re-establishment of democracy. The
path of Turkey is dangerous to the already tense region.
