New hero of BJP –Madhan Mohan Malaviya
I have written in my
earlier article how the new BJP government has taken Mr.Patel has their tall
leader, now they have taken Mr.Malaviya has their new leader. They gave him
Bharat Rathna along with Mr. A.B.Vajpayee .
Eminent historian
Mr.Ramachandra Guha tweeted “ If Malaviya, why not give
Tagore,Phule,Tilak,Gokhale,Vivekananda,Akbar,Shivaji,Guru
Nanak,Kabir,Ashoka,Bharat Ratnas”. The argument made by Mr.Guha is that if we
go before 1947 we have to give it to hundreds of people who shaped the people
and the award itself will become unimportant. But i see it in a different view.
Most of the people
in India know Pandit Malaviya has an educationist who established Banaras Hindu
University (BHU). If you read the history of Indian national congress (INC),
then you will know that he was the president of INC on two occasions (1909 and
1918). We are going to see three important aspects of Indian history in which
Pandit Malaviya had an active role.
1.
Lucknow Pact
2.
Khilafat Movement
3.
Communal Award
Lucknow Pact
In the late part of
the 1915, India was about to get a self-government under the control of the
British Raj. In order to achieve this goal the INC and the Muslim league came
together in an agreement which is called the Lucknow Pact. At that time Mr.
Jinnah was the member of both the INC and the Muslim league. Sarojini Naidu
gave Mr.Jinnah the title of “The Ambassador of hindu-muslim unity”
On the one side
Mr.Jinnah wanted to have a hindu-muslim united India, but later he changed the decision
because of the people in the INC who were anti-muslim. Even though Mr.Jinnah
was not a religious person, he felt that the rights and the basic needs of the
muslim will be fulfilled only if a separate country in created.
Even though the
Lucknow pact was signed; it was not accepted by the majority of the leaders in
the INC. One of the main feature of the pact was to give 1/3rd
representation to Muslims in the central government. This move was opposed by
Pandit Malaviya. When a person wanted no representation for Muslims, how can he
be a person of secular credentials? Pandit Malaviya was highly influenced by
Hindi, Sanskrit and hindu ideology. Also Pandit Malaviya was believed to be the
first person to read the book Hindutava written by Mr.Sarvakar and was very
supportive of the idea.
Khilafat Movement
After the First World
War the Ottoman Empire was on the verge of falling, to save this a movement was
started by the Muslims around the world. They called it the Khilafat movement.
It won the support from Mr.Gandhi and the congress. The movement became a part
of the wider Indian independence movement, but it was fiercely opposed by Pandit
Malaviya . It is understood that pandit Malaviya was expletively opposed to the
Muslims in India.
The BJP which talks
about Mr.Netaji and Mr. Bhagat Singh, will not give Bharat Rathna . Pandit Malaviya
was given Bharat Rathna for setting up BHU, so what about the recognitions for other
who took part in setting up of BHU?
Communal Award
Communal Award was
introduced by the British PM Ramsay Macdonald on 16th August 1932.
It granted separate electorates for Forward Class, lower caste, Muslims, Buddhist,
Sikhs, Indian Christian, Anglo-Indians and untouchables (dalits).
It was highly criticised
by Mr.Gandhi, not because he was against the untouchables (dalits). He feared
that this communal award could take away the untouchables (dalits) from hindu
religion. So he took the fasting in
Pune, and later an agreement was
made between Dr.Ambedkar and Mr.Gandhi, which is called the Poona Pact.
There was a person,
who completely rejected the idea of communal award, that person is Pandit
Malaviya. He also left the INC for this reason, after which he started a party
and contested in 12 central legislature seats. Pandit Malaviya had firm
grounding in tenets of hindu dharma, which encourage inequality among the same
religion.
To prove this I will
quote Bhagat Singh
Published in June 1928 Magazine, KIRTI (Punjabi Magazine)
“So much so, even a reputed social reformer like Pandit
Malviya Ji known for his soft corner for untouchables, first agree to be
publicly garland by a sweeper, but then afterwards regards himself to be
polluted till he bathes and washes those clothes”
Conclusion
The Bharat Rathna
awarded to Pandit Malviya is not only a biased award; it is propaganda of the
hindutava ideology.
